Alert: Seller Scam

I thought it important to share this with members in case this fellow attempts his sales scam again. I also reached out to the admin’s on both boards but have not heard back.

August 30th and September 4th I posted a “Wanted” notice on the Alfa BB and Alfa Owner respectively. I was seeking a “GTV AC Evaporator Module” (Control Unit).

On September 2nd, I received what I thought was a legit positive ‘referral’ on the Alfa BB from a registered member called “Barrycas” (“Steve has a GTV AC Evaporator Module for sale. You can shoot him a mail on stevehillman02@gmail.com Goodluck!” Those were his words verbatim.

I reached out to “Steve Hillman” and had several email exchanges over several days. He sent me detailed photos. (see below) and quoted a price of $90 dollars which included shipping. That low ball price should have been my first ‘red flag’ and that something was fishy. He sent me a PayPal money request from this account “Delibina Kagige”. The item was paid for September 11th via PayPal.

Subsequently, I followed up sending numerous emails requesting shipping information and have not received any response. The person “Barrycas” shows no profile info on the forum boards and the admin’s have not responded with any information on his account.

I don’t know if this is a common forum experience, if others have been scammed perhaps by these same two individuals: Barrycas/Steve Hillman but I did wanted to post this as a cautionary tale and to provide information on the perpetrators. Please share this elsewhere on the forum so the word gets out.

Sadly these muppets are out there and they wouldn't do this amount of work if it wasn't lucrative for them...

If you are at all suspicious, then please click on the 3 little dots top right of your post & send a report to us Moderators & Admins & we will investigate behind the scenes

Some people today seem to get pleasure from making others unhappy. They must be pretty miserable themselves to get joy watching suffering of others. Very sad indeed.

Alberto, here's the way I look at things. If a member has only a few posts, say less than ten, they are not someone I am willing to trust.

Look at the number of posts under their avatar. You, for example, have 2,145. If I was a newbie, I would deem you trustworthy. If someone has 1, 2 or 3 posts and they post an email address to contact them by, report them. You can look at all of their posts to see what they have posted. If they post the same thing and provide an email address, I would not deal with them. Make a post cautioning others to watch out. It's better to ask for forgiveness if you're wrong.

BRILLIANT! !!!!!
Now we all know, when in doubt, google. So easy.

I cannot believe it, he was so brazen, that he used Fred's photo, just copy paste.

Details edited out pending moderators' evaluation of the situation.

Latest one is XXXXX got me for $510 for XXXXX. Funds were sent through Zelle and gone for good. He provided a false UPS tracking number, user name is XXXXX.
I’m uncertain how to do business here unless it’s face to face. I believe he’s Canadian, is this international fraud?

FYI there are scammers out there using AlfaBB postings to find victims. I recently created a parts wanted post. I received an email directly to my email in which the "seller" said they had the parts I wanted. What should have rung all sorts of alarm bells is that the reply did not come through the AlfaBB app. I paid for the parts through PayPal, but used the "friends and family" option. I finally smelled a rat when the "seller" said their bank was hindering access to the funds and the solution was for me to send more money. The other mistake I made was putting my email address in a post many, many moons ago. That is how they associated my username with my email address. Live and learn.

I hunted that post down & edited your email address out...Alas too late

Please send me a private conversation with the scammers details

The scammers are still trying to get more money out of me related to my desire to obtain 102 fog light lens. This time they seem to have communicated via AlfaBB but wanted me to reply to an email address. I have posted a screen shot of what I received. There is no "silvio03" and the "conversation" links don't even line up with my parts wanted ad.

Thanks. Having no profile show up for silvio03 was helpful, given my new found wariness. Still they seem to be able to start (or fake) an AlfaBB "conversation". That would have fooled me prior to my March experience.

I had a similar email. That seemed odd and I looked him up with no result. Also no conversation in my profile. Suspicions aroused, I asked him to send a photo of the part and include in the picture his handle and the date. He responded that he doesn't want to deal with someone with trust issues. I doubted myself and felt maybe I over-reacted. Thanks for the validation.

Standard current scam on ALL sales sites on the internet. Shoes? He has them. New/used cars? He has them. Gold bars? He has them too. DO NOT SEND payment to ANY of these sites without a payment method that offers a full refund. Pay-Pal etc.

These muppets wouldn't keep trying if it wasn't lucrative for them... maybe 1 out of 100 falls for their scam, but it's free money for them. I watched a documentary on these clowns, there are rooms full of computers, 30 to 40 computers to a scam set-up and they are literally sending multiple versions of these mails for 8+ hours per day. Plus the usual "I'm the wife of the late Ghanaian Ambassador and I have $15 million, will you be my trusted friend to receive it for me & keep 20% - all I need is $250 to start the process"

They are extremely good persuaders & better liars - their livelihood depends upon their dishonesty & they have literally nothing to loose

If your Spidey senses start to tingle or you don't get a warm & fuzzy feeling about some pushy persuasive character, use the 3 dots on the top right to report it as Jay says, or simply contact one of us. We're here to help.

Ciao
