I really am not sure because they told me that they need to replace the compressor. But it has been a week now, and his "feelers" have yet to find one. I guess I just want to get it working again and they probably consider it low priority.

I really appreciate the help Steve....Thank you Sir....Paul
You really need to know what failed. Did compressor fail internally or just the pulley bearing fail?

If compressor failed internally the system will need to be flushed with A/C flushing agent and receiver dryer and expansion valve replaced. If just pulley bearing failed then just replace receiver dryer.

If new compressor has PAG oil t needs to be drained and refilled with Ester oil on a 12v 164 that had R12 freon or a R134a conversion.

They should drain new compressor and measure how much oil in new compressor if Ester oil then readd 4.5 oz. if PAG replace it with 4.5 oz Ester oil.

If you are just trying to get car going again and A/C is not issue don't let them service A/C system but besure compressor has correct amoint of ester oil for later on if you reservice A/C system.

There is a process documented on here on how to move alternator down to where compressor was and use a narrower and shorter belt.

My turn, this year. 1991 164s. It came to me without a working system. Completely outgassed. According to the PO, the compressor gave out. Given the open nature of the system, I'm planning to replace the compressor, expansion valve, dryer, and condenser. R134. I live in the Sacramento Valley in California. Its not unusual to see over 100* for a week or more during the summer. So, it'll be important to get it correct.

Hi Steve,

Have you ever tried replacing the seal for the end caps on the 91 164 compressor?

Yes, metal head gaskets on CB head ported end and square cut "rubber seal" on pulley end but not with much success.

Never actually was able to buy the rubber seal for front cover and tried to convert a CB head for a 164 compressor to a Sanden from a Volvo 780 Bertone body using new steel gaskets. Was not successful on either try.

Figured as much. Thanks.

Is there a compressor number I can order for a different car and have the right hose fittings and put my clutch on it. That won't cost 500.00.

Ford Motor home compressor see Roadtrip's a/c guide for more info on it.

I think motor home compressor info in his pdf link here in post 1 http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/164-168-1991-1995/198765-r-134a-conversion-guide.html

I think this is the one you need with correct mounting lugs and CB head 1990 - 2002 Ford Motorhome With Sanden Compressor SD7H15 Number 4653 but you have to convert to 7/5 pulley for 91-93 164: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine...Ford-Motorhome-RVs-/171778234138?hash=item27fec7d71a:g:GYEAAOSwCQNWcgNG&vxp=mtr

It was six or eight months ago but iirc I got my new compressor on eBay for $198. It's the Ford one, not much trouble swapping the pullies and it's working. I followed Roadtrip's guide other than the method for swapping the pulley. Look up my old thread titled "let there be air"

The pulleys are a easy straight swap. It's the armature (clutch plate) that requires some massaging. I think that's what you meant.

Hi Steve, looking for but cannot find post by User: roadtrip aka John Stewart, re "164 coolant temerature guage correction".

He recommended a 47 ohm resister at the sender on Thermostat assy.

My question: what wattage should the resister be able to handle without catching fire?

Thanks in advance to you and excellent article by Roadtrip dated August 2014.

My friend the electrical engineer Joe's recommendation: ¼ to ½ watt would do. Personally I would use ½ to 1 watt because of ease of connections. I would also use clear heat shrink to be able to view easier for any suspected physical malfunction. Joe

Here is John AKA road trips thread on subject: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/164...b/forums/164-168-1991-1995/341594-164-coolant-temperature-gauge-correction.html
