Troubleshooting 1985/86 speedo

I've been doing some preliminary analysis of my speedo. It's one with the green lead used with a 3 wire Jaeger type sensor (no additional amplifier box). I see the circuit contains an IC labeled 92967 RCA for which I haven't been able to locate a datasheet. If this IC is shot then that's the first problem and a pretty big headache. I haven't disassembled the rest mechanically but does anyone know what's the mechanical setup? Is it a servo motor? a stepper motor? Is there a spring cup like in mechanical speedos? Things to be careful with?

Back to the IC as it is the electronic heart. A couple of possibilities - while Veglia Borletti may have chosen it specifically for this speedo, it's also possible that in this particular time period - mid 80s - they had other speedos for other models/makes where they used the same chip. If the datasheet can be found I can then understand why it was chosen and then look for possible substitutes. Knowing what it does and looking at the rest of the circuit it will be clear what the motor wants to work properly and it is possible to design a completely new circuit to do the same

The assumption is essentially correct, but pertains only to the sensor. In other words 2 wire + amp vs 3 wire no amp. Actually 3 wire has the amp incorporated inside the sensor body itself. Note, the Jaeger sensor all plastic body actually came into versions, one with passive electronics (2 wire) vs one with active electronics (3wire). The question still remains as to what is in the speedometer since there is still the electronics necessary to take what the 3 wire or output signal of the amp and transform into what drives the coil in the speedometer. My guess is the speedometer is still a moving coil based design but several variations are possible. Differently it could be a stepper motor design. Opening the inside housing will bring more to light.

My guess is that it is moving coil because the pointer weight influences the linearity. I think that a stepper movement would not be influenced by small changes in load.

Also, the 85/86 speedometer responds to the same signal as the earlier speedometer it is just the signal frequency that is different. If you connect and early speedometer to a late sensor it reads almost 4 times too fast.
