Working on seal change on SD-709 Sanden Compressor

I started on seal replacement on Joe's compressor after my 164B left the building today.

I was able to remove clutch plate only to find no snap ring to hold pulley and bearing to compressor but being a pressed fit it was still below groove where snap ring should have been. Once I pulled pulley off and removed coil I found felt wiper shown in picture was missing. So missing snap ring and missing felt tells me somebody has been in here before.

The pulley bearing seems like new but the orings in the inner and outer portions of shaft seal and under the drain plug still the black ones found in the orignal R12 compressors. You can see green R134a oring seals in new shaft seal set.

This may have been a remanufactured compressor he put in many years ago.

I am down to my last new shaft seal assembly from Harold Electric.

I may not get back to project until Monday now. Wife got back from beach house so we went out to dinner. I have F1 breakfast in the morning and then helping serve fellowship lunch at church; etc... with the wife tomorrow.

Also found out Polar Bear sent me on my last order sometime ago a spare CB-3052C 30x55x23mm bearing for a Ford instead of correct 35x55x20mm CB-9703 for Alfa and Chrysler. Even though Joe's bearing seems like new I think I need to install a new one.

I guess I should have added spare bearing to list of stuff I ordered from Harolds Electric Co.

 

Now how did she know to do that?

Ordering bearings online for A/C pulley and serpentine pulley, etc...

Yesterday I did a little e-commerce with amazon.com and ordered up some new spare bearings for A/C clutch pulleys, serpentine belt pulleys and cooling fan motor armatures.

Some choices I found on Amazon 35x55x20mm size bearing

AC Compressor Clutch Bearing KOYO 83A894 or 35552RD3XS1CS33-F for Sanden SD-709/SD7H15 (also fits my Dodge Ram PU compressor).

Replacement for NSK 35BD219DUM A/C $22 (not sure what part number will be of this one but ordered one to see anyway).

Had good luck with NACHI in the past though a bit lesser known than KOYO or NSK.

 

Pressure and vacumn testing Alfa 164 Sanden Compressor

Sanden seal installer tools arrived today.

I got in the shaft seal installers for both the Sanden SD-709/SD508 shorty and SD7H15 compressors today.

What a difference using 90907 seal protector/installer bullet made to slip new shaft seal onto Joe's SD-709 compressor,

I will try out the smaller 91075 bullet for the SD7H15 compressor next.

I pressure tested compressor to 100 psi with R134a freon after installing 4 oz of ester oil and then pulled 30 in HG to and it passed both tests.

I will post pix of using installation tools later on next compressor I do.

 

Earlier this afternoon I had a good conversation with Joe from PolarBear INC.
I have a Sanden SD709 there and not sure whether he is rebuilding that or providing a new SD7H15 with my pulley.
Either way he installed new pulley bearing and indicated cost around $289.00.

1. Interesting set up for testing the compressor. Are the fittings put together from a hardware store? I'd like to test a couple of my 4 spare compressors.

2. I recognized that red Bricklin on your tool box right off. I was working in St John NB, Canada when the St John factory was setup and started producing them

 

My Sanden Compressor test fittings



Only thing from hardware store (Home Depot) is two 5/8" brass caps on silver compressor fittings. One fitting has R134a Low pressure side service fitting with valve core and other one has R-12 service fitting with valve core.

I have no idea where I got them from or when I got them but they sure do fit the CB head on Sanden compressors just like Alfa 164 hoses do.

I think these are the Harold Electric Co part numbers for the fittings but my flare nut caps from HD were 5/8"

where can we find / buy

new CB heads, and head gaskets for the CB head. I was told long ago that the head gaskets come in variable thicknesses to accomodate mfg tolerances. I will go back and look to see if I can find the description == although I do not think the service manual mentions this--

Bob I have a used CB head and just ordered a GA-4488-KT head gasket set to go with it. Also ordered GA-4466-KT gaskets for installing CB head on SD-709 compressor. Slight difference in gasket sets it seems.

HECO.net parts guy said they have new CB head and the parts guy said it comes with gasket set for $35 if you want to order it from them.

They sent me wrong shaft lip seals for the SD7H15 so I had to reorder correct 52554 seals I ordered last week. Invoice had correct part number I ordered but they sent me 52552 seals for SD-508 instead.

Pix show CB head and head gaskets with 7-cylinder reed valve plate that goes between head gasket set.

 

Have the tools changed for the SD-709 in the past few years? I bought a set about 5 years ago.

 

Do you have the 90907 black thin walled bullet that fits over the crankshaft for installing shaft/lip seals on both SD-709 and SD7H15 compressors?

That was the one tool I did not have and I could not install seal on SD7H15 without damaging seal.
