Is this a custom centre console? (GT Junior 1600, 1975)

Hi

I got this Alfa GT Junior 1600 last year and I want to renovate the interior. The veneer in the centre console is damaged and it's generally pretty worn, and I have spent hours and hours researching for either new veneer - or an entirely new centre console. However, I cannot find a single image of a centre console looking like this. It looks similar to a 2000 GTV console, but mine does not have heater controls to the left of the gearshift, and mine has gauges embedded in the top, while the 2000 GTV has them sitting the dashboard.

Can anyone help answer if this is a custom made centre console? (and I need a custom repair job) or if it's an original console for which I might be able to source parts somewhere?

Thanks in Advance
New vintage Alfa owner from Denmark

It’ looks like a 2000 GTV console, just modified. Your GTJr has the heater controls in the standard location on the dash, so no need to mount it on the center console. The replacement veneer (missing the chrome trim) covers the stock 2000 location for those controls. Gauges were then added. The wiper and fan switch locations below the ash tray are also covered by vinyl.

My 1975 build, 1976 registered 1600 GT junior. Has a 2ltr type dash and console, a deep dish Helebore, and a 2ltr type 4 head light front grill.

Your steering wheel looks to be a nicely fitted shallow dished Hellebore so indicates a long shaft steering box when by the year (1975) it should be a deep dish wheel.

I would guess that using the serial number, Alfa will tell you that you have an earlier build date than that indicated by you registration (1975) they might even tell you it is a 1300.

So to answer your question, The centre console seems to me to be a previous owner modification. And to answer the question you didn't ask, there may be something strange with the 1975 registration.

Thank you so much for this! The steering wheel is brand new - my guess is the previous owner bought it from classicalfa.com and probably chosen because he liked it - but the serial number is definitely something I will get checked with Alfa to make sure. On the console it seems I need to get a custom shop to fix it. Thank you!

Ah! Good theory Pete. I think you are right. It has been restored by a shop in Italy specialized in restoring Alfas. The dash is definitely new - they probably put in the nicer 1750 style dashboard, kept the 2000 style center console - modifying it so gauges were added and holes for heater controls and switches were covered. Thanks for clearing it up!
