Burman steering box

Hi. I’m putting together a 1300 GT junior that I didn’t take apart. Lots of surprises. One is a cracked steering box case. I found a use with solid case and the races are not pitted. I thought that I read everything about these boxes, but the ball bearings are of different sizes. Forward and rear bearings have 7,1mm ball bearing, but the worm gear has 7,9mm. The groove/race is wider too. Forward has 10 balls, rear 13, but the worm gear has 26. I just want to be sure that I have the correct amount? Has anyone here on the forum experienced this?

Welcome to the BB DouglasJet, that is an absolutely beautiful Junior and an exceptionally clean garage...

Is your steering box the Burman or ZF one and I presume LHD ??

Balls should all be 9/32”. I believe 54 in total.

So Doug, have you answered your own question? I have learned something as I have never seen such a Burman. Are you sure about the ball diameters as the boxes were built, as far as I know, in the UK so might be English units.

Sounds like there were some oddball (GET IT?) Burman boxes out there. I wonder if there's any commonality in year those cars were built?

I'm sure the boxes are all English units. The standard balls are 9/32" (~7.1 mm) and it sounds like Douglas's box has a nut with 5/16" (~7.9 mm) balls in it. Here in the US they're both available from McMaster.com for not very much money but I'd assume they're a bit harder to come by in Europe.
