Automatic Transmition

Hi my name is Ray, a mamber of BB but not yet a good user.
I have an 1971 Alfa Spider 2000cc, LHD, and I would like to convert it into an Automatic Transmition from manual.
I am interested in purchasing a gear box and also a console for conversion and also would like to have some ideas of what and how to make this conversio.
I am not doing this for fun but because I have problems with my left foot.

Hi Ray

Welcome aboard the BB, you have 2 choices, either to modify / convert your existing Spider, or to rather look for one of the later Automatic Spiders that were sold in the USA.

My guess is that simply buying an existing Autobox Spider will be far cheaper that modifying your existing car - installing an autobox is a *LOT* of work & time - see here - http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/gt-1...-disabled.html.

There was a green 2.0 litre Auto on Ebay a month or three back

Auto Gear Box

Hi Grieg
I would like to thank you for your reply and would like to start by wishing you a Happy New Year.
Yes you are probably correct but I have just finished a Full Restoration and am attached to this car.
I was also told that the Fiat 2000 had the same gear box and it should be able to change it without much trouble but the trouble will be with the interior and the installation of the Drive Shift.
But first I must find the Gear Box and then start thinking of the installation.
Probably and i am sure you are correct the cost would be much more then just changing the car.
Thanks and regards,
Ray

Hi Ray

In your situation, I would think it would be much simpler to keep the standard gearbox and go with an automated manual clutch, this technology has been around for a while, SAAB used it several years ago with a sensor in the gear lever knob which was linked to the servo motors operating the clutch. More recently the previous generation Opel Meriva was available in an MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) variant.

Companies that retro-fit vehicles for disabled drivers should be able to give you a heads-up on an MTA system that would suit your Spider. It's not very complicated, a servo motor to run the hydraulic clutch and a sensor for the gear lever plus an on-board ECU to run the mechanism.

Renault pioneered the automatic clutch system (with "sensor" in the stick) from as early as 1957 on the Dauphine. It worked pretty well and was supplied by Ferlec.

Found AR*2480743* to be living in Sweden with only its second owner.

Built in 1975 and registered in Sweden that same year.
Hi from Sweden and a newbie on this forum, just got excited over that I recently bought this car, now restored and in good condition

Hi Mats,
Congratulations and welcome to the BB!

In the end, we bought its sister car 2481066:

And now we need pictures of your car! :chef:

Anyone have an advice where to buy new rubber for the brake pedal, that suits the larger pedal on the automatic?

I also need mats and carpets and interior for the trunk. Suggestions?

You should try someone in South Africa, who has knowledge of parts for Automatic 105 cars such as GTV 2000 Automatic,or Berlina 2000 Automatic available in South Africa, because many RHD Automatic cars were assembled in South Africa, using the ZF transmission from Germany. Good luck with the pedal rubber, the mats and carpets and trunk interior can also be sourced from South Africa.

Congratulations Jacob!

Nice car and what a nicely strange mixture of a 2000A with 115.36 details!

Would you happen to know the chassisnumber?

Judging by its chassisnumber, it's a 1972 manual... :whistling:

The 115.36 details that I can see in your pictures are the 4-headrest interior, the black wiper arms, the black plastic decoration pieces on the louvres between the wipers, the black plastic c-pillar piece and the slightly darker horzontal "chrome" strip on the grill. All items that can be easily transferred from one car onto another.

Just a note. There is a german language version (might be the only one!) of the 1750A transmission manual on ebay at present.

Couple of pics....

Cheers.
