How many springs should there be in the main fuel filter housing? I know I took out two (pictured) a year ago, one up top and one on the bottom, but for the life of me I cannot remember which one went where and I now think there should only be one on the bottom? Any diagrams/pics I tried to pull up do not show the location of the spring(s)...or if it is 1 or 2..

On my 74 GTV I just changed the filter cartridge and I only had one spring under the filter.

There is a chance you guys are talking about different filter housings. 74 and older had one style with the fuel pressure bypass in the filter head, 75 and newer had a better filter element and the fuel pressure bypass in the three port pump under the car at the back. No us alfettas older that 1975.

Well looks like I have the 2 port version. Taking a closer look at how it works, there cannot be a top spring as this would impede the rubber o ring on the filter element to seal against the top cover of the housing. So looks like I was defeating the purpose of the filter by having that top spring create a gap and letting unfiltered fuel get into the outlet port. Pretty sure I had the smaller spring up top. So I am assuming the large spring is correct for the bottom? Anyone familiar with that small spring?

Big spring on the bottom. Nothing else.
