Spare (steel) wheel condition

My spare is in rough shape. Lots of rust. Vintage Pirelli 165SR14 rubber (original?).

Thinking about refinishing the wheel and getting new rubber. Other than cosmetics, is there anything I should be aware of? Is the wheel too far gone (structurally, pitting)?

Refinishing is not too much of an issue as my media cabinet will strip the metal nicely. The biggest nuisance is going to a shop to get the tire off first. If it is too far gone then I won't bother with it.

Yes, looks like an air wrench monkey wanged down one of the nuts, on the rear, while the center was caught up on the axle hub ridge. Good as a spare but not much else unless you can straighten it, which will likely cost more than it's worth. I just looked into getting a Ford steel wheel straightened, started at $149.

I too think that some careful whomp'in with a hammer could repair that dent. On the other hand, those 14" wheels without hubcap mounting humps aren't all that rare, so if the dent worries you, or the wheel wobbles after knocking it out, just find a replacement.

Other than the dent, it doesn't look that bad with the tire still mounted. You can't really judge a steel wheel until you remove the tire and inspect the condition of the inner rim where the steel and rubber contact. If that area is badly pitted, then a new tubeless tire is likely to leak. And even a slow leak can be a problem on a spare, as you are less likely to notice deflation and check the pressure less frequently.

Turbinas are too thick for 1750 and earlier studs. Have to have long 2000 studs to use them safely.
I would worry on beating it back not so much about weakness, mild steel is very adaptable stuff, but that the bolt circle won't be flat and the wheel will be out of plane, have a wobble when seen from ahead or behind.

I have a wheel you might be able to use.

I have many steel rims in stock with or without tire.

Where are you located? I have a few as well....so if you're in the west end.....or east end by the lake.....let me know. Did you want to stay with the same YOM wheel? There are markings stamped on the rim (usually the inside though).

Thanks everyone. Some food for thought. Might just give the wheel some whacks and see how it goes. It may be therapeutic at the very least. :)

I’m right downtown Toronto. Will look locally to avoid shipping if it ends up going that route.
