Methanol as Octane booster

Hi all,

I have high compression engine that needs racing fuel otherwise the engine is pinging. Unfortunately racing engine is not allowed in my country. I tried to use Toluene and it killed the fuel pump (Diaphragm).

Does anybody have experience with using Methanol (not as water injection but as addition in the fuel tank)?

Will the fuel pump resist Methanol?

Thanks,

Dunno about the pumps, but methanol can be pretty nasty to rubber bits and aluminum too if not flushed out after use. (reg'd aluminum: if using straight methanol, it'll corrode if left to sit w/o cleaning it out for any real amount of time. As to a mix with gas  might be fine, might just be slower erosion)

Depending on % mixed in, you'd prolly need to tinker the A/F ratio a bit too as in general it takes 2x the methanol as it would gasoline to get the same result.

Aviation gas if you can get it. Its leaded, has some alcohol in it, but its likely 100+ octane. I'm not sure how hard it is to get in your country. Might be worth a try at a small airport if you can find one. A warning however, the alcohol will attack rubber bits if you let it sit. I run Avgas for race gas sometimes, but I use all of it up without letting it sit on the drive home.
