Here's another shot of my GT from a few years ago with another set of wheels,
I sold them to buy the GTA replicas, I should have kept them.

105 junior that looks great, nice stance. Have any more pictures with the gta wheels? Im still quite far away from paint on my car but still like this intriguing color.

Thanks Yves - I noticed that color on the alfa literature and looked it up recently. It's purely a matter of personal taste but I'm looking for something with a bit more assertive and unique hue than gold, but it is most certainly period correct.

Porsche had many fascinating tertiary colors, all of which I find so much more appropriate for a 70's car with brightwork than their primary equivalents. For instance Peru red is just so much more interesting to me than Guards red. I also love the color of the first car on this thread...

Yes, Porsche had interesting color choices. Just for fun I scanned the 1975 Porsche 911 color cards; both the "standard" range and the generous "optional" choices. The scans came out a bit lighter than the cards.

You are right about Champagne being a bit bland; my memory is associated with a GTV that existed in my childhood neighborhood. It was a deeper gold, but obvioulsy had been repainted. Champagne, while it still looks good on a GTV, reminds me of the bland color choices on current vehicles.

Two other original Alfa colors that would look good with a black interior are Piper Yellow or Light Blue Metallic. I am not sure this color was ever offered on the 2000 GTV, though.

Whatever you choose, be aware that ordering modern paint in an ancient color code does not always deliver the expected shade; many changes in paint chemistry are involved. Get a sample mixed and tested before getting the whole bodyshell painted...

Thanks for posting - I love so many of those colors, and the 911 has an almost unnatural way of wearing every color well.

My car was originally "Beige Cava" according to the Alfa Storico registry. Probably looked a lot like the picture below. What do you think of that color? My wife has a visceral reaction against it. I think its interesting from an intellectual standpoint but can't say I find it beautiful, sporty or Italian.

The only reason I would have a Beige Cava GTV is if the paint were completely original and in good condition. Otherwise, the painter's going to be shooting another color. Beige is sooo

Great choice on the Metallic Olive.

Thanks guys, i appreciate the sophisticated color discussion. While you are on the line let me ask for your thoughts on a very different color, rosso amaranto. There is no ambiguity about the hue or value of this color and there are may pictures of gtvs looking spectacular in this color all over the internet. I like how it combines a classic italian maturity with a sportier look, pairs well with a black interior. My question is a similar one to the issue we discussed with the gold color - will it at times look like just another maroon car? I realize that the brightwork and just the shape and proportion of the vehicle mean it'll never be mistaken for a rental car, but I wonder from yours standpoint, is it a missed opportunity to go for a color like this?

In 1980 I met a fellow who owned a rosso amaranto GTV in virtually new condition. To make a long story short it became mine in 2008.

On an overcast day it takes a purple shade, but under the sun it becomes a brighter red.

Interesting. I find it a lot less appealing in that light. If you hadn't told me i would have guessed it was prunga, not amaranto from that picture. Does look great in the sun though. You didn't say if you ended up liking the color...

Yes, I like rosso amaranto very much. My car had the (dead) original paint when I got it; it was resprayed in 2009 and it actually ended up slightly lighter than the original shade. I do not have any photos of my car in clear weather, the one I've posted above does seem a bit dark. I feel this photo of a Giulia is representative of Rosso Amaranto.

I've always liked GTVs in dark colors; dark blue is another of my favorites (which I would combine with a red interior!). But honestly I believe they look good in practically any color.

Prugna is a tad darker and contains more blue than Amaranto; there was another color available in 74-75 which was very close to Amaranto, but metallic. At a car show last fall we had GTVs in those three colors, at first glance they appear almost identical.

Thanks Yves, very useful opinion. I'm leaning heavily to the more interesting olive metallic and will try to find one of those little body double plastic forms that people use to test spray colors. My body man has already sprayed out a bit of grigio indaco and biancospino for me. I want to make sure he gets the metallic 'depth' looking period and not like a candy paint hotrod. Really don't know much about metallics and will need to start educating myself.

By the way, anyone intrested in color and in cars period, should read j Krauss' excellent posts at autouniversum: A History of Automobiles and Colour before the Age of Chromophobia | Auto Universum

105 junior, why do you wish you kept the other wheels. was it the size, because the GTA rims look good.

Agree, those gta wheels look great. I think they have a nice clean look that keeps the car feeling vintage but the added touch of sportiness prevents it from feeling 70s in a staid way.
