Enzo Ferrari and the 164

Perhaps a silly question but nevertheless here goes: It's been pointed out on this forum and others that Enzo Ferrari owed a 164L. Since he died in 1988 it would have been a short-lived experience and he would have been about 89 years old if my math is right. Anyway do we know for sure that it was a 164L and perhaps not a 164B? The only picture I could find of Enzo posing alongside a 164 (it may not be his car of course) seems to suggest a car with cloth seats, an attribute of the 164B. The presence of alloy wheels in the photo is certainly not an indicator of the 164L since many owners bought the 164B with alloy wheel upgrade. Anyone?

Good observation: a 164TS with cloth seats. Notice that EF is standing on the passenger side which suggests that he didn't drive himself (it might be hard with those black glasses at 89!), but was driven. The Autopolis cite claims "Enzo Ferrari himself was driven around in a Thema 8.32 in the last years of his life. Enzo also gave 8.32s to his Formula One drivers, adding some amount of credence to the orphaned Ferrari mindset". So 8.32 owners proudly claim him too. I guess the whole thing could be a myth, as someone of EF's stature was probably driven around in a whole lot of cars. Oh well...

that'd be cool if it (mine) was this car but....this one carries plates from Milan - thus the MI prefix which denotes the general region. Mine FWIW in PN which means Pordenone which is in the region known as Friuli Venzia Gulia. On the map I'm sorta NE of Venice by 'bout an hour. This car in the foto and mine are very similar from what I can see. I'm surprised how expensinve these "base" 164's were back in the day. 35 million Lire or about 35K in dollars. Anywho, the plates stay with the car for the life of the car here and unlike in England, they do not reflect the year of the car. FWIW... Ciao Chris

Chris you are up there aren't you in Casarsa Della Delizia Italy?

We anchored out of Treiste once in February and I didn't even go ashore. Before that we had got caught ashore in Bari when boating was canceled due to weather and "likely froze to death" it was so darn cold that time of year.

My last trip to IT was coming down from Garmisch, DE to Bolzano for a day trip. We got passed coming back on Autostrada by a Maserati like we were standing still.

Maybe next year we will get a chance to come over for a visit.

Yea Pordenone, Udine and Trieste are all pretty close. My town is indeed Casarsa (known for wine) and we are between PN and UD about halfway. I'm near Aviano Air Base if that helps (maybe 20 miles east) @ the base of the PreAlpi mountians which for all intent and purpose are the Dolomites. Podenone is pretty much equal to the county seat. Ciao Chris
