"Brake" and "Brake Pad" Lights On After Tire Rotation

Took my 91 164S in for oil change and tire rotation; asked them to clean the brakes when they rotated the tires. When I got it back, the brake fluid and brake pad lights were on, in tandem, on the ARC. They've stayed on, for the most part, for a week. Sometimes they go off for a few seconds, especially after the car is warmed up. But they always go off, and come on, in tandem.

Checked the brake fluid and added some DOT 4. No apparent problem there. I do think it is time for new pads, but don't know if that is what is causing the lights to come on. Maybe electrical??

On the subject of pads, another member had recently posted re: his problems with EGB Greenstuff pads. Anybody have any experience (bad or good) with any particular pad?? I wouldn't mind upgrading some from OEM, since braking has seemed to me not equivalent to the power and handling of the 164. (Maybe I'm still used to the way my spider would stop on a dime [course, I wasn't doing 90 in it either ;) ]. Thanks!!

Check to be sure none of the sensor wires are broken that connect to the brake pads. Possibly an 'entheusiastic test drive' while the car was in for service?? I'm going to Ferodo pads when I put new brakes on my S...

You might be right about that, as I've noticed that both lights go off if I turn the wheels all the way locked to the right or left (perhaps sensor is then making contact??) Is the brake fluid sensor located in the same place though? I thought it would be on the reservoir... Maybe I just need to try to clean all the contacts....

I have this exact same problem.

The brake fluid light comes on and off. and now the brake pad light comes on.

but now it tends to stay on most of the time, but it goes away as well.

i think the culprit is a leaking brake fluid hose as the brake fluid was recently refilled. and that the pads are in fact worn out.

To be honest, I would never have someone "clean" my brakes unless they meant that they were flushing the fluid. Pads shouldn't really be cleaned and rotors shouldn't really get that dirty to begin with. The solvents that they use to clean those areas kind of scare me, but that's just my opinion...

As far as "brake" light coming on, that would be the fluid level is low. Now, the plunger can get old and grimey, especially if your fluid is dirty and that light could definitely be coming on and not giving you an accurate reading. Flush your fluid! :)

For the brake pad light, make sure the 2 connectors and lines that go from the pads to the hookup near the top of the flexible brake line are connected. Also, if its time for new pads, I've had good luck with Raybestos PG Plus and they have a little more pad area than the ones that came out. They don't fade as early as some of their competitors. Semi-metallic seems the way to go these days..?

I hear you about the spider. They have such a great brake setup!
