Strange ticking sound

My 164S developed a ticking sound when idling. The sound is quite fast and is affected by the RPM's. It goes away if you put a load on the engine by letting the clutch out a little and not giving it any gas. The sound is easily obscured by road noise, so I don't know if it happens while I'm driving.

It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side. I can't hear it outside the car.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Thanks,
Greg

Fuel pressure regulator can tick pretty loudly as can a poor connection on one spark plug lead.

Can you hear it from outside if the hood is up? Can you use a wooden or metal rod as a primitive stethoscope to identify exactly where the sound originates?

He said it IS affected by engine speed. I'd suggest italcarnut is on it!! ciao, jc

Sometime putting it in neutral and letting off the clutch helps diagnose as well since you can stick your head down in there and feather the gas with the bellcrank at the throttle body. ciao, jc

Thanks all for the responses. The ticking was gone this morning and didn't return until late this evening. I drove over 500 miles before it came back. Hopefully I can make to my daughter's house in Utah tomorrow.

The age of the release bearing is unknown. I'm a checkbook mechanic, so hopefully I can find a shop in Utah to take a look at it.

Harris Import in SLC. There's also a place, well used to be, in the Orem area but I cant recall the name. ciao, jc
