Silent starter motor...

Hi Everyone
I've got a 73 GTV that out of no where wont start. When I turn the ignition key to engage starter motor there is absolutley nothing. No clicking no nothing but silence.

Any thoughts on what this might be?
And does anyone know what sort of current should be drawn at the solenoid?

Was hoping to take it on organise road trip this weekend :frown2:

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Easy things first
Is battery charge
are you getting 12 v to starter on the main line
is the wire that engages the solenoid getting voltage when you turn the key (Small red wire that plugs into spade connector on starter

Thanks Alfajay.
My spade connector [hidden behind throttle knuckle] I believe to be negative as its black.? The thick cable traced back to battery is positive on the terminals. This has been unchanged ever since I've had the car....all 21 years.
Should I be connecting another positive lead somewhere to remote start?

Do you have a basic schematic?

Cheers

Pretty much all wires in a car carry positive voltage - the chassis is used for negative ("ground"). A wire's color doesn't necessarily tell you its polarity - the large wire between the battery and starter is black and that carries positive voltage.

Just bridge between that large wire to the starter and the spade on the solenoid. Best to connect your jumper to the spade first, and then touch it to the "+" source - less chance of inadvertent shorts that way.

Thanks Jay
I made up a little jump lead with momentary button and followed your instructions [positive to spade]but still nothing but silence. It might be the bushings in the starter, unless there are other suggestions?

It might be darned near anything! I'd guess the solenoid or brushes before I guessed the bushings, but no matter...the starter will need to be removed and replaced. You can either have your existing starter rebuilt, buy a new replacement, or substitute a gear-reduction starter.

If you want to play with it some more, you can do the bench test as klharper124 outlines above. But I doubt it will work on the floor if it doesn't work in the car.

Or just the starter.

Can you pull the starter and bench test it.
Three bolts hold the starter on. Pay attention to the shoulder bolt, the center one, as its location is critical.

Unhook the large black wire. That one goes to your battery. I am not sure what the red cable is but this is a RHD car and may have a few differences than what I am use to.

Anyway once off the car take a set of battery cables and hook them to a good battery, red + black - , and then on the starter hook the red cable onto the post where the large black wire on the car was attached. take the black jumper cable and attach to the body of the starter, one of the ears where the bolts goes through works well. Then take a jumper and connect it to the spade connector and then touch the other end to the post where the red cable is attached. Oh hold the starter. I usually do this on the floor and put a foot on it as it will jump if working properly.
