Rear Belts

One of the curious features about my 1300 TI is that it doesn't have any rear seatbelts. Or even mounting holes, in the event that I wanted to install them. I don't haul passengers around very often, but when I do, they generally don't take comfort in the suggestion that the front seats will act as passive restraing devices in the event of a crash. That said, if a car doesn't have mounting holes, how much work is involved in installing them (is it just a matter of drilling a set of holes in the metal beneath the seat cushion, or does one have to weld in specially reinforced plates with threaded holes)? And second, any thoughts on what sort of belts would be best? I was thinking some discreet black Simpson Racing units would fit the bill.

Cheers,

Euro cars of this era didn't typically come with rear belts, I don't think. You can just drill hoses and install large area washers on the back side to spread the load.

I have Milano or 164 center rear belts (non retracting) in my Super for rears, work great (as a US car has nutplates). Or aftermarket period style belts with airline type buckles, from Moss Motors, Victoria British, others, look reasonably period and area cheap.

I have installed rear belts to my Super. Actually this assembly is not compeletly street legal in finland but I made it. I mostly carry kids on backseat jo it is important to have them tied.

I used threaded lifting eyes with 8mm holes and big washers under the car. Belts are aluminium airplane belts. Very light.

Couple pics from assembly. Maybe not the most beautiful solution but belts are easy to clip off or hide under the seat.

Oh yea, those squeamish passengers of yours will feel a lot better when they see racing belts in your back seat! Maybe you should hand them each a helmet too.

I buy my seat belts from Gem Street Rods - see: http://www.gemstreetrods.com/Seat%20Belts.htm

AnAlfa, I too don't often carry passengers in the rear seat of my '67 Super but I overcame the rear seat belt problem by installing retractable belts from my now departed '84 Giulietta. As Andrew suggested, drilling appropriate holes in the rear parcel shelf and using large flat washers will solve the top mount problem. My Super already had the mounting holes in the floor, presumably for lap/sash belts, so it was an easy installation.

Thanks for all the input, everybody. With expert help from Glenn Oliveria in Berkeley, the Giulia now has a set of eye bolts. Just waiting for a set of belts to arrive from Crow Enterprizes. Good looking, and inexpensive at around $45 per lap belt.
