I'd decided that I wanted to install Carello headlight covers, and eventually hit the add to cart button on Centerline. Now they've arrived I am faced with a problem - they don't fit. Based on the layers of paint, primer and filler I am at least the 4th person to perform bodywork on the left hand side and the second on the right. Consequently I don't know what the original bodywork shape is supposed to be. Nor can I tell exactly how the covers are supposed to fit. Are they completely flush, are they slightly recessed?
If anyone could send me some close up photos of what a factory install would look like I'd really appreciate it.

So..adding Carello Headlight covers... there are some additional threads here on the AlfaBB you want to search on. Most Spiders have the thick chrome rings that will not accept the Plexiglass headlight covers. You have to remove them and use an available smaller ring, which puts the headlight pretty much flush with the body work (picture #1). Some early imports to the USA ('66 & some '67's) have the narrower chrome bezel ring that accepts the Carello headlight covers, but not many. This part is considered 'unobtanium' though on rare occasion you see them for sale. The USA DOT said 'no go' on the headlight covers and Alfa had to redesign the headlight bezel ring such that
it would not accept the Plexiglass headlight coverings.

the beauty of the narrow chrome ring is that the headlights stay where they are and can be adjusted from the front.

I suppose one day someone will 3D print these, then you could paint them body color or something.as I doubt we have gotten to printing chrome as yet (but, who knws?)

fitting the headlights inside the fender you need the headlight buckets with the removable inspection cap at rear (to change bulb) and the aim can only be done from inside the fender, by means of a knurled knob (if you are lucky to have that)
but if your lights have all the correct buckets and braketry to fit them from inside the fender, then why not...I mean one doesn't need to change a bulb or adjust the aim every week :ROFLMAO:

I have been working on getting Carello headlight covers on my S4. Since I could not find a smaller chrome ring to allow the covers to fit, I created my own fiberglass trim rings. They allow a small chrome ring to show from the headlight mounting ring and the front mounting headlights can stay there. Here is a photo of the trim ring, the body work underway, and the lens in place.
