Hey Guy's need some help with this one..

Drove the car long and hard the other day, got her into the 5000rpm range couple of times..drove great!!
I'ts been sitting for a couple of weeks in my cold garage, went to start it, it fired up and ran for 10 sec and died. I havn't been able to start it since. Ok so the engine turns over and over, all gages function during ignition,
Any idea's?

Thanks in Advance

Assuming no internal derangement (pistons still going up & down and valves opening closing) then the problem is likely lack of spark &/or fuel. Check for spark - connect a spark plug wire to a spare spark plug, ground the threaded portion and have your trusted assistant turn the key to 'start' while you watch the spark plug. There should be a snappy blue spark.

If no spark check system voltage during cranking. Connect a voltmeter to the battery and see what it reads. (do not trust a dash gauge) With everything off a well charged battery should read ~ 12.6V. Next see what it reads during cranking. Again, do not trust a dash gauge and do not assume it is OK because it sounds like it is cranking with good vigor. System voltage must remain above ~ 10.5V during cranking for the computers to wake up and send the make spark/squirt fuel signals.

If you have a good spark then check for fuel delivery. There is an in-line fuse for the fuel pumps located next to the FI computer - under the parcel shelf behind the passenger seat. May we assume there is gas in the tank...?

Thanks Eric, The fuel pump fuse is clearly blown! This could be my problem.

Odd looking fuse, where can i find a replacement?, are these available in any auto parts shop? what is the amp for this fuse?

Thanks again for your help

If you ask for a fuse for an old VW bug a local auto parts store might have them. I have bought a small variety pack of assorted amp fuses at Auto Zone.

You can order them from the usual Alfa part suppliers - like IAP (click picture to go to their web page)

Many Alfa owners will remove the old fuse holder and replace it with an in-line fuse holder that takes the easier to find (& likely more reliable) blade fuses.

The fuse rating is 8 amp. Next question is why did it blow?

Of course my 86 Graduate came with the plastic Alfa fuse holder back there. After replacing the fuse several times and the holder twice, I changed to the second fuse holder type in Eric's post. Been with current employer 10+ years and it was a few years before that when I changed it. It lasted until last year when the drain holes for the top plugged and the gutter overflowed flooding the well under rear shelf. Fuse blew while attempting to start the car. Dried it out, replaced fuse, all has been well again since.

I picked up a fuse and it worked! Car started up on the first crank. Thanks for the help Eric..
I love this Forum you guys are great!

So why did it blow? that's the next mystery..where do you suggest I start looking?

The old fuse type isn't as reliable as could be, replace it with a modern fuse and holder as specified by Eric and use the exact same amperage rated fuse. Carry a spare fuse in the glove box. Drive and forget about it for now.
