Steering Wheel Install Question

Hi everybody, I'm new here, nice site!

Well, Tony has me stumped again, hoping you'all can help.

We took the steering wheel off to replace the collum switch & when we went to put things back together I noticed there's no slot in the saft for the key to fit in like normal. Where does the key go? It won't fit between the hub and the shaft & would mess up the threads if it was crammed in there. Does it have something to do with the slot that's covered by the spring-loaded sleeve over the shaft? I'm puzzled.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. I tried to post photos but no luck.

B.

You sort of answered your own question. There should indeed be a slot for the key, at 12 o'clock, and it's hidden by that spring loaded sleeve. The trick is to compress the spring and keep the sleeve compressed while you fit the steering wheel on with the key in place.

The way I did it was by taking a flathead screwdriver and after compressing the spring, pushing the blade--perpendicular to the steering wheel shaft--into the steering wheel shaft to hold the spring and sleeve in the compressed position while I placed the key in the slot and placed the steering wheel on the shaft. It wasn't easy, it took several tries, but it worked and I managed to do the job with just the two hands I have available most of the time.

The hardest part was keeping sufficient tension on the blade of the screwsriver so that the spring doesn't slip, forcing the key out of the slot.
