Does anyone know what you have to do to reregister a car that the owner has lost the title on? It's in California and has not been registered in years. Major pain or simple process?

When I bought my car, it had no title. The car was abandoned at
the repair shop. They had to use a lawyer to get legal ownership
of the car. I dont know what forms they were, but the new owner
had the paperwork, but no title. I went down to the DMV with him,
as I would never buy a car without a title, and they processed
all the paperwork in front of me, then I paid him for the car.
I would call DMV and ask what the process is, looks somewhat complicated.

detceterini Is right. I have registerd cars before with a bill of sale stating that the pink or registration had been lost. They did not have a notorization, but nicely typed with the date and both signitures of the two parties and also the sale amount.
