Are axle shafts common between different years of GTV-6 production? One of my CV boots is torn and it seems easier to replace the entire axle with a good used or remanufactured unit vs. replacing the boot. Just want to make sure there are no fitment surprises.

The answer is yes, there are changes. Have a look at this post:

Late GTV6 and Milanos have the same axle-disk separators (short) and shafts (long), while early GTV6 have are the opposite (long separator and short axle). You can see both separator models pictured at the linked post. I have never had both side by side but it seems that the length difference at the axles is noticeable too.
Everything is fine as long as you keep the right separator/axle combination. I would use the same combination in both sides too.
About changing the boot, it's more dificult finding it (and not much) than replacing it.
