Mysterious Alfasud Oil Leak: Help!!

My Series 1 Alfasud is leaking some sort of oil from the bottom of the front inboard disc rotors on both sides and I can't figure out where the hell it's coming from. The entire engine, transmission, halfshafts and brake system have been rebuilt. The leak is definitely NOT brake fluid. The tranny and engine only have assembly lube in them. The leaking oil is very clean. The car has never been driven since the rebuild so I cannot see how it could be coming from the transmission driveshaft seals. The oil appears only at the very bottom of the disc and I can't find any oil at the top of the disc or near the calipers.

I wipe off the discs and the next day there are tiny puddles of oil directly under them. Has anyone ever encountered this?

Hi,

I've certainly had oil on the rotors, and that's one reason I rebuilt an engine and brakes for my car recently. The inboard disk rotors seem to be an area that any engine oil leak makes it way to, worst luck. My rotors have often had engine oil and other times brake fluid on them. Makes braking very interesting!

But if your sure it's not brake fluid and there is no oil in the engine or transmission it's got me beat. Is their coolant in the engine and heating core? Could it be coolant?

I'm no expert, maybe someone else has an idea.

I think it can only be coming from the gearbox half shafts, I dont see how any other oil could make it to the same place.

Did you install the half shaft oil seals correctly? is it all seated squarely? Perhaps there is a wear groove in the half shaft axle's from the old seals and this causes the seal to be less tight allowing assembly oil to seep past them onto your rotors.

I have a late-model 'Sud quadrofoglio gearbox, not the 16v version. The gearbox was completely rebuilt by Charlie Skinner of Cloverleaf Transmissions in England. He also installed a new Quaife Limited-Slip diff.

Charlie told me that he only used assembly lube in the tranny. The car hasn't been run and the gearbox is basically empty, so I don't see how it could possibly leak through the output shaft seal.

There are no breather hoses anywhere near the front discs. The steering rack is definitely not leaking. We even rebuilt the half-shafts, but they use a heavy grease that is completely different from the oil I'm finding on the rotors.
