While the Z was at the interior shop, we opened the driver side seat reclining hinge in an attempt to repair the crudely welded internals.

That’s a known problem and they tend to break. In the den days, owners simply welded them in a comfy place, as was done to my driver side.

Unfortunately, mine is beyond repairs and we welded it back together permanently.

Now, I would like to find that unicorn of a functioning mechanism or entire seat. Or I would be happy to poll the collective wisdom here. Do I recall correctly that the same mechanism (chromed though) was used on Fulvia Sport?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike, I'm currently restoring the sheetmetal of a JrZ, and visited a Dutch Zagato specialist to look at some details that were lost in previous rust repairs. While I was there the owner, and said specialist were discussing the restauration of his seatframes using new production upgrated mechanisms. It's this club. https://www.hetjuniorzagatoarchief.com/technology-maintenance/

Rolf van Hillegondsberg is behind "het junior Zagato archief" together with his wife Nancy. Rolf is very knowlegdeable guy. Knows about improving the seatframes/seat mechanism. He dedicates part of his time to help other JZ owners.

Ciao, Olaf

I sent mine to the UK to Omicron Engineering, a Lancia Specialist, to be repaired. Both my passenger and drivers side would fail when I hit a bump. Now they work perfect: http://www.omicron.uk.com/

the same seat mechanism is used on Lancia Fulvia's ( normal and Zagato version) On Lancia often in full chrome. I once collected a seat mechnism for my JZ from a Lancia parts supplier in Holland.

I think the Lancia versions (aside from being chrome) also locks in position on both sides of the seat rather then how the Alfa JrZ locks on only one side. Lancia has a rod running form one side to the other. The lack of this is the main reason as to why ours fails. See image below - hinge on both sides:

Fred - you are right on the Lancia seats. I also think that the Junior Zagato Registry is working on a fix mechanism. Not cheap but really needed. Maybe I will get a used one from Lancia and raid the internals.

Yes, if it would be possible I'd personally like to try to use both sides to hold the seats as the Lancia does. If you attempt this please post your work!
