look for chips, abnormal wear, etc other than that they last a lifetime and you shouldn't need to repleace them. I'd get a new lower chain for sure. The upper chain is pretty stout and although it steches any slack is taken up by the chain tensioner.
you can hold you new lower chain at one end parellel to the ground and see how much is bows down compared to a new one held up beside it.

no sweat, technically they are sprockets but as long as they are ok we're good to go:)
