What Wheels Best Suit a 105?

Well I know I'm only new here, but I am seeking some expert opinion regarding the best wheels for my 1750 GTV (or any 105 series GTV for that matter). I am going to need new tyres at some point in the near future and I realise my current rims are a bit dodgy, so I need to get on the lookout for some new ones. Since there are a few fairly common styles of aftermarket wheels people put on their 105's I thought it best to put it to the vote...

So I am chosing between the following common styles...

1. GTA


2. Cromodora


3. Minilights (or any equivalent)


4. Other Style - please nominate & post a convincing picture.

By the way - this is the car they will be going on. I should have added a fifth option for those who think I should leave well enough alone...

My personal view is the Momo Vega is the nicest looking wheel, especially on the later versions. My next choice would be GTA rims.

Although I think the Momo's suit some colours more than others, and I've never seem them on a car the colour of yours. The wheels on your car look fine to me.

Momo Vegas are a bit too flashy for my liking. I'll chalk one up for the existing wheels to stay (my wife will be happiest if that is the final outcome). I guess since I have never seen another 105 with these rims I haven't really been that confident about their appropriateness.

I thought I would add this link to an earlier thread on what wheels people have on their cars - part of my research base.

Since wheels are very much a personal choice, it will be interesting to see if the poll reveals any sort of preference... I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices you've posted. Personally, I think the GTA wheels look very good in a car from that era, but I like the other choices too.

I know you car. I have seen you on Oxley Rd or on Honour Avenue from time to time. I have an Olive green Metalic S2 1750. I have always been coming the other way or out walking when you have gone past. Would really like to have a closer look at your car one day.

The 105 Alfas (and all period Italian cars, I guess) seem to be "wheel sensitive" to my eyes. The Campagnolo GTA style wheels seem to fit the car best, closely followed by Minilite designs and then the Cromodora "star" mags.

However. In period, Campagnolo actually had a fairly large range of Alfa wheels and, honestly, just about all of 'em looked very appropriate on the cars. I have, for instance, a set of Campy "star" mags which suit the 105 design so well that I'm going to use them on my car.

Somewhere in this pile of debis that passes for a study, I have an original Campy wheel catalogue listing all the the various Alfa specific fitments, including wheel offsets. When I find it, I'll scan it and put it on the forum.

Nice car, btw.

Thanks Jim,

It would be good to post a catalogue of those period wheels. It would also be interesting to see which, of the plethora of alloy wheels seen on 105's, were actually available as dealer supplied, after-market options in those days.

It's a small, small world! I'll keep an eye out for you - when I get a new $%&# battery (surely a battery with a two year warranty should last longer than two years and four months!:mad:)

Doubt you will spot me anytime soon, the 1750 is currently being stripped down for my respray and body work. Your welcome to pop round and take a look. PM me.

BTW what sort of battery did that to you. I bought a Bosche for mine, bit worried that it will spoil before I get her back on the rd again. Silly thing to do but 6Mths ago I was happy to keep driving her as she was. Now super keen to have her fully restored and am doing as much as I can myself

Personally, I prefer the original steel wheels with the proper large ring wheelcovers. My first choice though for a non stock wheel is a Minilite/Panasport.

I agree Papajam. Im a big fan of the steel wheels....especially the widened ones that fill the guards out nicely.

There seem to be a few variations on this theme. Some show a smooth rim/ridge form the inside out to the edge ( photo 1 ) whereas others seem to have an additional rim/ridge/ledge half way out ( photo 2 ). I prefer the smooth edged version.

I believe that the additional rim/ridge/ledge is where an original narrow wheel has been widened.

Availability is going to be a big factor

Finding momo vegas or cromodoras is a bit difficult (only harder bit is paying for them) whereas superlites can be ordered new, as can GTA replicas (although, paying for them is also a problem).

Widened steelies is also a cool look - esp 15's with the big hub cap for a 1750 or 1600 style car - very nice.

I like the wheels you have. Offset is a bit escortish, but looks very period, nice dish, cool.

However, more importantly than the wheels, that car seriously needs to be dumped about two inches - go see Avanti at Northgate and buy some springs dude!

Yeah she looks a bit high, probably has Berlina springs I have seen that before in the UK. Jason any idea what Richard charges for Springs ?

Take a look at this. BTW the car in this photo now belongs to a BBer in the UK and it is fitted with GTA wheels, oh and the spring issue has been fixed.

It actually sits lower on the passenger side - I was told that this was due to the springs being designed for fat Italian guys in the driver's seat (that sounds like a saleman's line - can anyone say if there's any truth in it?). Anyway, I don't really want it lowered - I've already wrecked one sump and being an every-other-day driver I like not having to worry all the time about the evil traffic-calming speed-bumps in our area. I always thought some 15" wheels would make things look a bit more in proportion without touching the suspension.

Classic Mag Campi's

Hey, they all look great, don't they! You can't make a mistake.

I very much wanted to put these wheels on my car... classic Campi's. However, these are truly mag wheels, and required special preparation. I had a machinist lined up to trim the wheels' mounting faces to a required, minimum 30mm positive offset. But to really use these on the street, as I intended, in our JAX Beaches environment, I had to then strip the finish, reseal, and refinish the set. I couldn't negotiate the price to a level where it made sense. Still love the wheels, though.

I ended up going to the Aussie Superlight, as my mechanic had a set he wanted to trade in 14x6 with 30mm offset. I had to chase down wheel centers, and install Alfa emblems sourced through Centerline. Project came out great.

By the way, for street, and possibly even track days, the Vredestein Hi-Trac in 185-65HR14 (yes, H rated) works great on a 6 inch wheel. The stick and rain performance on my Berlina are amazing. These are readily available... and a very modern tire construction... and work great on 105 series cars. Note in the photo, I messed up and mounted the front wheels backwards... Brain fart. Fixed it a couple hours after mounting.
