Great to read your letter in the AROC magazine. Cool stuff.

We have not opened our syrup yet.

Took a drive and made it only 2 miles to the junction of Skyline Drive and Ringwood Ave which is a pretty busy intersection!
Engaged the clutch at the stop sign and the engine just sputtered out with no warning. The battery was too weak to crank the starter.
Flat Bedded back to house and rolled it into the garage.
Found battery low at 11.5 volts and did start with the battery charger hooked up.
Alternator was not charging, BUT, also there was no battery light lit on the dash with key in on position.
Broke out the shop manual and found the V wire from dash battery light runs to junction G56 ( on left side of inner fender ) and then runs
to the Alternator.
Took off the plastic cover at G56 and found the V terminal pushed out of the plastic connector and not making contact.
Tightened and reinstalled connector and now the battery light works and alternator charges!
I've had the car only a few weeks, so that connector must have been lightly making contact because it was charging at 14 volts for some time.
At least I was only out for a pleasure cruise and there was no cost for repair, just $105 flat bed charge and I was close to home in the friendliest town of Ringwood with the whole episode lasting only 20 minutes.

I still have a prominent metallic rattle from the left door/fender area to diagnose, but thats for another another day.
My wife doesn't know it yet, but since we are leaving our 2 Greyhounds home this Sunday, we are driving the Alfa up the winding country roads to my
Daughters house in Sussex County.
I still have some time left before the Winter sets in!!

Alfa's show love by leaving us on the side of the highway occasionally. Just have to accept it.

The sure way to make one stop is to think about how well the car is running.

Warm for November!

Here in Ohio, if you get a 60 degree F day with sunshine, wash the Spider!! :laugh2:

I glued the vent window latches that I got from alfajon1967 on the driver's and passenger's vent windows. I consider them more decorative than secure...

New Top and Cleanup Day

David: I'll watch for you on the roads out this way! Would love to connect to see how you've found getting service and support in this area.

I picked up the Spider late Thursday with the new top--they did an outstanding job and the difference in wind noise and appearance was dramatic. I knew I needed a new top when I purchased, and am glad I got it done now. With a sunny, near 60 degree day, it was finally time to clean the Spider inside and out. I had not cleaned the car since it arrived from CA at the end of October, and was stunned at how dirty the interior really was. On the outside, much washing and twice as much time drying--its amazing how many crevices and spots on every edge can collect water. After drying as throughly as possible, I let the car air dry in the sun and breeze, then went back over all the problem areas one last time.

No wax today--the water beaded up well, and it was time to get in a drive before putting the cover back on waiting for another warm day! A couple of photos below:

Looks great.
I am debating whether or not to have my top replaced in the near future only because it is original and faded.
Can I ask you what Company you used and what the cost was.
I am kind of nervous about having a shop that is not familiar with Alfa's do it.

Huzz: I sourced the top through Difatta here in Baltimore and they used a shop to install that regularly does Alfa tops. I was very satisfied with the quality of the top, and the work was done in two days by the upholsterer. The fit is very tight, and the interior seams all look to be done correctly. I also replaced the seal/gasket for the top. All in with tax and installation I spent about $1200. No leaks after washing the car on Sunday--a good sign!

Thanks,

Steve

I had to leave the car out in 30deg weather over night due to xmas tree drying out in the garage, and spent an hour getting it defogged and defrosted enough to drive it into Portland. She had her first head-torquing after the engine rebuild! I'm now free to drive it pretty much how I want it. Only negative about the visit; once again, my VVT doesn't freaking work. I got it working a couple of years ago, but since the rebuild it's once again sleeping. Not that I notice- with Motronics in a fresh engine, it's plenty quick :)

its possible the solenoid is just physically stuck and that is very easy to check/rectify:
remove the electric connector, unscrew the end bit and pull out the little shaft.....that can gum up.

Mike explains here:
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/spider-105-115-series-1966-1994/415594-vvt-solenoid-really-dead.html

might of course be the electric harness has failed (there is a workaround) or the internal oil passages have blocked.

Transmission back in place!

My son came over and helped me wiggle the transmission back into place. Now to get all those upper bolts back in...:frown2:

I've now experienced removal & replacement of the combined engine & gearbox AND the gearbox by itself... and I'm firmly of the opinion that it is far easier to just yank the whole engine and gearbox on a 1976 Spider!!

We had the annual AONE Christmas party with singing Christmas songs with slightly changed lyrics. Here is my favorite.

I got 12 Alfa beers from the Yankee Swap gift exchange.

Was snowy, and a challenging drive in both directions. Worth it of course.

No John... you're not crazy at all! You took the time to make them fit and look right! Hats off to you, sir! Great looking Spider.

It was 52 F today so I took the black Spider out, so far 500 miles has been put on her this year. Towards the end of the drive some kid in a white Spider gave me a thumbs up as I passed him. Smh, white? :grin2:

I have been working on adjusting the idle on the individual FI throttle bodies and after this drive today I can say it's good. It was a lot easier when it only had 1.
