Other than try to tape up my S4 mirror that some jack wagon broke, not much. Since I sold my house I have no more garage for now. I was just getting ready to drop my Spider off to get motor mounts, trailing arm bushings and pan guard replaced. And I see this on the way out. Nice! At least I had some matching duct tape to keep it from flopping around on the freeway. I found a used one from APE in the same color thankfully. Not cheap $150, but better than $266 or $377 new and unpainted.

Put mine up in the air in anticipation of Hurricane Harvey :frown2:


It won't save it in a washout, but hopefully the extra 8 inches will give it a measure of protection.
I'm pleased to report that we avoided flooding in the storm - the insurance wasn't necessary, but it was good for peace of mind.

Here's an old thread about repairing your mirrors. It's missing some pics but I was able to use it to repair mine as both were broken and glued back together by a prior owner. Even if you replace your broken one it's probably a good idea to repair the broken one and keep as a spare

The fix works great. I just have to figure out why the motors only move mirror in one direction (down). Could be a bad switch i guess.

Driving home from work today in my '73 Spider (top down, of course) a guy came alongside me on the freeway, rolled down his window and yelled something that sounded like "brake.....". When home I determined that the good samaritan was telling me that I had no brake lights. Fuse (#2) was OK so I shifted my attention to the brake switch. Pulled it out and quickly determined that the switch was toast. A trip to the basement and rummaging around in the "Alfa Electrical Parts" bin uncovered a brand new, unopened, brake switch (doesn't every Alfa owner have one?....). 10 minutes later, brake lights restored. Time for a celebratory ****tail!

Installed the engine, trans + rebuilt driveshaft in my '76 resto project car. Trying to get it running to drive to my upholstery guy for a new top this coming week, before the rains start in.

Started the process to sign up for Hagerty today. I'm worried that I haven't heard back from the agent...he called at one point to ask me 'would I be driving my cars to work more than 60x in a year?" I said 100x, combined with the TR6 that I'm also trying to insure through them. Haven't heard back yet :surprise: Hey, they say that it's OK to do so...once in a while...

While waiting on the Stepped Hose to finish the in-tank pump replacement, I've been doing other neglected mechanical and cosmetic maintenance on my newly acquired '85 Veloce. Today was the second day of trying to massage some life back into the intact-but-hardened and creased/cracking leather seats. Actually, they're not too bad except for the tops of the headrests and the forward half of the seat bottoms. I have the driver's seat out of the car and swimming in Leatherique Rejuvenator. The product is not absorbed as easily as I expected, but I'm hopeful that it will restore enough flexibility to prevent more serious cracking or separation of seams in the short term, and continue to soften the leather over the next month as advertised. Since I'm not in a hurry, and the weather's a bit cooler than ideal for the job, I'll probably let the Rejuvenator work for another few days before using the cleaner.

Getting the seat out was easier in some ways and harder in others than I expected. The screws were not very tight, and not corroded in place. But the rears were very hard to reach due to the forward rail stop still being in place. Several posts here said to remove the rear screws first, but the stop is held in place by one of the front screws. The task would have been much easier had I discovered that before I spent 30 minutes with a loose impact driver bit and an 8mm wrench, turning the rear screws out a quarter turn at a time (!). Rather than investing in a set of offset screwdrivers that I've never needed for anything else, I'll be replacing them with low-head socket cap screws.

My first 'mod'. ;^)

Spent the entire weekend at car shows. Pound Ridge, NY on Saturday and Caffeine & Carburetors on the Streets of New Canaan, CT on Sunday. Ran into lots of old friends and made some new ones. So many cars, so little time!

Suffered through yet another day of trolling the internet for the perfect Spider (for me) to buy. I am now Queen waffler since I debate all 80's and 90's models with myself.

I mended the non-operational windows on my S4.

I'm a bit too much on the large side (height and girth) to be contorting upside down between the steering wheel and the seat while trying to shine a torch on the fusebox and keep my reading glasses perched on my nose. Also getting far too old for such gymnastics!

Some idiot (probably me) had put a 10 amp fuse in the box and it had burned out. I only deduced this after I'd taken the card off the door to see if there were a jam in the mechanism. It was only then that it occurred to me to check whether the other window was working. A lesson, methinks, in being methodical.

OTH, just as well I bought a full set of auto fuses on a whim only yesterday...as I had no 25s in my current inventory.

On a more positive note, as required, I contacted my insurance broker to inform him that the car had had bodywork done and a full respray. I also told him that the car was probably worth another £4000 on top of the insured sum as a result. It is now, give or take the need for a new carpet, as good as a non-concourse car can get.

Would he be so good as to tell me what increase in premium I was in for please?

Zilch, zip, nada came the reply!

Well, well. It is not every day that an insurer is not looking to make some more money out of a policy-holder! Kudos to him.

I drove the pee out of my S4 this morning, and hey did it love that cool, foggy dense air out on Bowman's Mill Road!

Well done, Ricambi chip :grin2:
I swear cars pick up a few HP in that air.

checked oil and tire pressures today for next weeks trip to Gulfport for Cruising The Coast event...will take her out tonite to dinner and a short drive tomorrow also though

I drove my S4 from London to Nuits-St-Georges. All well, except for a 1.5 hr delay waiting for the AA as the inhibitor switch on the gearbox started to play up just as I stopped to get a 5.30 am cup of coffee.

When I tried to start up, nothing. All the cluster was alight so I knew I had power but no noise, no cranking. I thought I'd lost my starter motor. The AA man diagnosed the problem in 10 seconds and told me to fire up with the gearbox in neutral.

For the remainder of the journey the car has started from "Park" but I'd better get the gearbox to the garage when I hit my house in Italy tomorrow.

Other than that, lovely journey although I could do with a fourth gear or an overdrive. I only bought an auto because my wife only has an auto licence but the car is not done any favours by this gearbox.
