I am in the process of rebuilding the engine in my 1972 spider.
While the heads were removed I decided to check the cooling passages ,all is well except that I have fluid running out of the wheap hole on the water pump ,This was not the case when the engine was running last year. My question is, is this normal when in the static position or do I have a failed water pump seal. The pump does not spin free it acts somewhat like a stepper motor to the feel but seems to have a fair amount of suction.

Anyone please before I order a new pump

You need a new water pump, the tell tale leak is a bad seal and the stepper feel is bad, most likely corroded, bearings.

Agree. If you are doing an engine rebuild, now's the time to put in a fresh water pump. It will never be easier and it sounds as if you need to do it.

Thankyou all for your quick reply, I thought so but it never hurts to ask.
A new pump will be ordered today.
