Hi all,

How stiff should the water pump bearing be on a new or rebuilt water pump? Is there any lubrication that it needs? Also, why is there a threaded hole on the pump? It doesn't seem to leak if not filled...

Also, how thick should the gasket be? The gasket that was provided in the gasket kit seems to be really thin.

Thanks!

The seals make them stiff when new, but they should be smoooooth. ;) The hole, are you talking about the weep hole at the bottom? That is the hole that let's you know when the seal has failed and coolant starts to come out of that little hole. It is a mating of two machined surfaces so the gasket is thin and honestly, doesn't even need any sealer to help it out either.

I hate those thin paper gaskets that come with pump as they are usually distorted or even cut in half because of poor packaging in bag with pump, but if it is flat and not nicked from sharp edges of pump it will work OK.

I get correct Alfa gasket from Difatta even if paper gasket not torn. They are black and a bit thicker so hold their shape better.
