Depends on the size of your bank! There was a Schwitters dog box for sale on an SCCA forum recently for $4000. Don't know what ratios were in it, but you could always swap out Hewland gear pairs to get what you wanted.
That has been my experience as well. I have always had a close-ratio box, but carry a stock box as a spare. A couple years ago I had a failure and swapped tranny's between sessions. I was 2 seconds slower after the change.Foe what it is worth, when I put a close ratio box- 2.54 through .85 -into my 1300 Veloce FP car, it was worth approximately 2 seconds a lap. Sears, Laguna, etc.
