My '86 Spider Veloce says it has a max vehicle capacity weight of 375 lbs

How strict is this limit? What is the downside to going over it? Going over slightly vs going over a lot?
I have a friend who is a bit hefty and we took a day trip recently - I knew about this limit before departure. The car seemed to hold up ok, but just wondering about this.
