I came across the attached paper entitled "HIGH ALTITUDE OPERATIONS WITH PISTON-ENGINE POWER-PLANTS DESIGN OPTIMIZATION PART II: TURBO-CHARGING, TURBO MATCHING, EFFICIENCY AND SERIAL ARRANGEMENT OPTIMIZATION" from the University of Bologna.

In it they explore the use of piston engines for high-altitude, long-duration aircraft. One way to make pistons engines work at high altitude is to use two turbochargers in series.

What is curious, for Alfisti at least, is that they use a 3L Busso V6 as the example for their calculations.
