Over the weekend I picked up my 94 Q with a new trunk lid (used to be Richard2's) with fresh paint. The old lid was pretty mangled on the driver's side where hinge assembly attached. Some welding and creativity went into fixing the hinge parts on the driver's side.

But when I picked up the car I was informed that the trunk wouldn't stay open now. LOL

Del has been working on me to switch to springs. But now that I've had all this work done maybe I keep struts - but I'd need new struts.

I bought a hinge assembly w/springs but they're not S springs -- so they won't work.

Advice por favor? Buy new struts?

I have one of each and frankly neither one of them will hold the lid open on a nose high incline, that S spoiler is pretty heavy. I've read all of the horror stories about the struts but haven't had any issues with mine. Both of them work okay on level ground so it's not something that I've had to think much about.

I wonder if you could rig it up to have both struts and springs, since you have the parts. That might work.

I cut a prop rod to the length needed. Mine does not have struts, just the springs we relocated to the proper hole to increase the tension. Wind blows and it comes down. ciao chris

It does work. Actually only one spring was needed so that if I park on an incline (with front of car up, rear down) the trunk fully opens stays open. But I have an "S" (1992) that came with struts AND brackets for springs, I gather that some don't have the brackets.

I have the spring on the right side and it tends to "twist" trunk slightly so I always close it with my hand on the right side, never slamming it, just gently pushing it down (don't want to bend body panel where left pad of trunk rests).

Just use the struts but please be slow and gentle opening and closing trunk. It's more of people opening/closing the trunk quickly or with force that kills the hinges and most specifically up inside the C pillar body work. I have seen them rip out of the weld up there. Not easy to fix.

I just had the whole hinge / C pillar redone -- and more. cutting, welding, yada yada.

I've seen struts for sale on PartsGeek. Do you have them, Jason, and can you be competitive on price?

So long as it's just an assist. I had a stick to hold up the hatch on my GTV6 and knocked it loose loading a box one day. That thing came right down on my head and I kid you not, dang near killed me!

funny you mention this Mr Paul. I was "diving the trunk" the other day. I fit in the trunk "mafia style" and still have room to work. Instructions to the wife go like this: "look out once in a while and if the trunk lid is shut, make sure I'm not in it".

Funny how these things work. On mine it is balanced "just so". It stays up fine but the slightest disturbance causes it to come down. ciao chris
