Toggle switch on S3 console - What is it for?

378 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  pininfarina
I newly acquired a 1988 S3 with an interior that is in moderately rough shape. There is a hole in between the side view mirror adjuster and the cigarette lighter. I've seen in some pictures a toggle switch there.

What is that toggle switch for?

Here is an example of a similar car with a toggle switch there:

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. I'm a bit new here.

whatever it is, it is not a factory fitted option, looks like some aftermarket switch. Could be just about anything I guess.

I think you are right, but I do see it on other examples as well, but different toggle switches.

no factory hole there.

could have been a toggle switch (for an aftermarket accessory),
or
could have been a little red tell-tale light, for an aftermarket fitted alarm, as here

your power window switch looks broken: it is missing the central control toggle as well as the left - right select part.

Thanks for the advice!

As for the power mirror toggle, yep, I'm sourcing some options this weekend. Ash tray, radio, gauges not working: so many other issues like this need to get worked out. Hopefully the next time I post an interior shot, it will be dramatically better. 🤞
the power mirror switch (used) is real expensive when/if you find it

the left/right control has kindly been drawn up for 3D printing by Kevin
with that file a 3D shop should be able to print it off (or if you know someone with a printer)
3d Printed Parts

but the central toggle part has not been reproduced (as you don't really hear of those breaking...someone must have hit it hard!))
looks like this:

On my 84, that hole in the center is for a thumbscrew which holds something in place near the ashtray- I can't remember exactly what now and I'm 100 miles from my car, but I can check it in a few days. No switch there.
My 84 is different from your setup. On my car the end of the console is a cap held on by a thumbscrew which goes in the center hole.
I think someone mentioned it, but on my 86 that is the toggle switch for the power mirrors.

I don’t think the hole is factory but that is exactly where I placed a toggle switch so I could turn on my factory cooling fan in front of the radiator. I have AC and I like to be able to manually kick that fan on when the AC isn’t running if the temp starts creeping up while I’m in traffic.
I also have the sensor on the shroud that is supposed to automatically turn on the fan but it never seems to come on when I think it would.

the toggle I used was from an earlier S2 I believe so it has the appearance of a factory switch like the first BAT link you posted.
you could put any sort of toggle there for all types of accessories.
Thanks for the advice!

‘if your interested I have both toggles for the power mirror switch
