1984 Veloce 2.0. Having a problem getting the camsto line up after head gasket replacement. We brought the cams up to one of the marks and marked them when we pulled the head. The motor was not cranked over. We can't seem to get any compression. The motor did sit for 3 months with out the head. How do you retime this engine as far as the crank and cams go?
Am at witts end.

Position the #1 piston at TDC. The cam lobes should be facing out (intake pointing right, exhaust pointing left). The camshafts have a small mark that you'll need to align with a mark on the rear face of the forwards cam bearing halfs. If they don't align you'll need to adjust the position of the camshafts after tensioning the timing chain (after tensioning the chain because they'll move a little when the chain is tensioned).

The exhaust cam is fairly easy to adjust - one large nut at the forwards end and small locating bolt that can be re-inserted in another hole to lock the cam in place. The intake cam requires a special tool or a 55mm wide but quite thin wrench.
