Now that summer has arrived I have been forced the fix the stepper motors on my 164's climate control. Currently it only blows air onto the windscreen no matter what option you choose and the stepper chirps like a cricket.

My car is slightly easier when it comes to stepper access because its a LHD 12v euro model accessed behind the instrument binnacle and you can at least visually see the rear screw even if you cant get your hand in there.

I'm struggling to find an ebay link to one of the BMW steppers that have the gears I need. Can someone point one out to me or at least tell me which model BMW has the correct steppers. I can go down to a breakers yard yank the steppers out if someone can tell me how to access them from the BMW dash.

Thanks for the help.

You need the stepper gearboxes from an early 90s E31, E32, E34, or E36 BMW. The motors must be from Bosch 0 132 800 001 or 003 series gearboxes. Picture below. There may be others that fit, but I know these do. When you do overhaul the two steppers on the assembly, do the 33 ohm resistor mod as well. You'll need the brass reinforcement ring for the distribution drum too. You can probably get one of those locally at a plumbing store . . . a 3/4" brass ferrule ring.

If you are unable to source some salvage parts in NZ, PM me. I have enough spare gears to fix two stepper gearboxes.

A few threads to look over:

Theres plenty of those Beemer's 5 and 3 series at the local Pick-a-Part. Are the as hard to get out as the 164 and any heads up where they are located in the car?

Don't know. I've just ordered them from BMW salvage yards. Haven't had to go "dashboard diving" to get them.
