I think Bianchi's adaptor plate would be much simpler and cheaper I also think it would be strong enough. I just really wanted a close 5th gear which I couldn't do with the Motorsport box which has the longer input shaft which the adaptor plate needs. That box is also probably stronger and has a more useful first gear.
One advantage of doing the conversion my way ( I can't claim any credit for this, it has been an unintended positive consequence )
is that the clutch bearing is supported when you remove the gearbox without the motor/bellhousing.
I think that unless you have a gantry crane and a hoist puting the motor with the T5 attached in would be impossible ( due to extra length ) , which is fine because putting them in separately will be much simpler.

just wait untill you drive this box, the shifts are sooo much nicer, up shifts/ downshifts are very sharp and clean..i would recomend a short shift tower for you car, makes the shifts even better.. are you goung to use a steel d/shaft or alumiumn? the latter will fit, but you must remove all the org, handbrake mounting hardware..i used a corvette hand/parking brake on my car. got to go to work now. will post photos of vette' hand/parking brake when i get home..oh yes.. the alum. d/shaft is one hell of a lot smoother, and less spin up weight,

I am very much looking forward to being able shift gears without double declutching - sometimes doing it twice ! I'm sure its going to bring down lap times especially in traffic when I am concentrating on other things.
I am thinking about using a short shifter - not sure if they fit on the S10 gearchange - probably do.
I hadn't thought about the driveshaft but if you say aluminium improves acceleration I have to look at it. I don't really need a handbrake ( although it is handy ) also it must weigh a few kilo's.
What size tube are you using?

it depends on you shifter location, if you have thr forward s10 location..nope..it wont work, i run the rearward mustang location,, s/s works well there.

Some more photos of T5 , shifter is roughly 35mm further forward although the two box's are sitting at a different angle so maybe less, ( so a T5 with the longer imput would only be 15mm different ) T5 looks much wider than Alfa box in the photo , measures out at about 25mm wider although its in different places so we shall see -- its a race car so if I have to cut some holes in the tunnel its not the end of the world. Also various tabs have to come off the T5.
Other photo shows scrap bits left oer.

Thanks to those who have contributed to this thread. I'm missing one thing that may have been covered, but I've re-read and have not found it. What is the pilot bushing used for this conversion? I haven't found a standard bushing that fits both the Alfa flywheel and the T-5 input shaft.

Thanks in advance.

Now I understand why you've used the Mustang. At the local salvage yard I found the tailshaft for an S10 at a good price with the transmission still attached. This seemed like the perfect way to go since I wasn't interested in the WC vs. NWC. I was unaware that the S10 and Mustang input shafts for the pilot bushing were different. The S10 T5 uses a pilot bushing with an ID of 0.594". The stock Spider ID is larger at approx 0.6338". The Mustang is even larger than the Spider. I suppose I could use an S10 bushing and shave some off the outside 1.094" down to 0.9606" to fit into the Spider crank. OR, I could give in and use the Mustang.

Again, thanks for your help. This Alfa bulletin board is great. Many of us could not have done our Alfa thing without this ALFABB community.

So did anyone put the adapter out as a kit? This seems to be the ideal way for me to go with my Alfa 1600 powered Kellison bodied special. I have use the Mustang 5 speed in a past build and it is solid as a rock.

a note , speed in gears

3rd gear 4k=54............4.5k= 61...............5k= 68...........5.5k=74...........6k=81 .........................4th gear 4k=70....4.5k=78.....................5k=87.................................5.5k=96......................6k=105............5th gears( .72 overdrive )3k=72................3.5k=85................4k=97....................4.5k=109..............5k=121..........5.5k=133.............................6k=147............. only problem not enough power in 5th gear to get above 4.3k=104... so i will be looking for more power this summer... at this moment i have a 6300 rpm fuel cut-off with my new LH jet.. chipping it to get a 6500 fuel cut-off.

Thought this thread deserved a bump. Does anybody have pictures of a completed install with the shifter in the stock location (S10 meld)? Only pics I have seen move the shifter.

Also, has anybody successfully transplanted anything other than a T5 (notwithstanding Alfaholic's $10k sequential box)? Would love a fully modern 6 speed.

T56s are enourmous and shift like cr*p, Aisin 6 speeds (toyota/miata/nissan/honda s2000) are common enough, but are integral bellhousing i think - I think they're significantly bigger than the alfa tunnel... All the BMW 6 speeders are integral bellhousing which makes life fun.
There's not really a lot of choices here!

From the looks of things the Alfaholics box is one of the 6 speeders that are based on the old ford escort box ("Rocket box"?)...
