Can anyone tell me what size bolts I need to use on my steering wheel puller to thread in to the holes in the wheel on 87 quad?

Thanks

Grrr, I just did this but forgot what size I used.....but try some of the bolts that hold on the door armrest/trim stuff. On my '83 (non-monopod dash), the screws that hold the armrests on happen to be the same thread size as the steering wheel puller holes. Your '87 has the later interior, right? It might be worth taking out some of the armrest bolts and seeing if they fit the steering wheel.....I don't see any reason for them to go changing hardware around.

The armrest bolts probably won't be long enough, but after verifying size, you can take them to a hardware store and find a match that's longer.
Stud for Steering Wheel Puller

I used m6 studs that I found at MSC online. See one of the links here for MSC part number:

BTW: Don't use all-thread and try to make your own. Its too soft and tends to bend.
just take it to Home Depot and make sure you get the right size
Spider steering wheel removal

Whatever you do, don't pull on the wheel and take a hammer to the centre shaft to release it from the taper! I bought my S3 Spider from someone who had done that, although I didn't realise at the time. The wheel would stick in one place and I could go round in circles without holding the wheel......... It turned out that by hitting the shaft, it damaged the gear in the steering box. Cost me a lot of money to put it right, not to mention the time involved.:)
6mm bolts/studs for steering wheel removal

I had to order mine as none of the usual places (Home Depot and True Value) had 6mm bolts long enough.
Then I went with studs which allowed me adjustability on both ends.
Thanks for all the input. I got it off using a standard 2 arm gear puller.

Thanks
There ya go. Pretty sure I got mine at Home depot. Also used a gereric puller.
Primitive Pete say puller for girlyman. Him say get wire out of way, loosen center nut but don't take all the way off and do make even with top of swirly thread things, brace knees behind wheel, hit centernut hard with hammer. Wheel pop off and nut stop it from hitting you in teeth.

Is that a puller for old people to use? :)
Hey Bigboy,

Don't do it like this!

See my previous thread. Maybe Primative Pete owned my Spider before it got shipped over to the UK!

Hit the centre nut hard enough to break the tapered fit and you will damage your steering box. At UK prices, the LHD ZF steering box is about £400 ($800). Believe me, the gear will be damaged!
Lol, yeah dabigboy. Too old to remember to use spell checker too. :)
My steering wheel came right off when I loosened the nut about a half turn, locked the tab and then drive as per normal for a week. No puller, no thumping with a hammer required, just a sharp tug.
what size is that nut.. not the he-man here..:) but the nut holding the wheel on? thanks
