I, have eventually finnished the winterproject, installing a ZF stearing box from a Volvo 142. The layout of this ZF box is similar to the original one, and the pitmanarm slids right on the shaft. This old ZF box is very solid, and is still going strong. (Later Volvo 140's have "Volvo Flygmotor" license produced steering boxes)

No, it doesn't bolt right on, so I had to weld a steel, interface bracket.

The steering is now smoth as silk.

In an old thread, it was suggested to install a Volvo 164 ZF power steering unit (same as Opel comodore).

No, it is too large, and would be very difficult to squeze in. It would come to close to the exhauast manifold.

Thank you for posting this information, Erik!

Do you have drawings with dimensions for the adapters you had to make?

Steering Box

After reading your post I decided to do the same Volvo 142 steering box conversion. Thanks for posting this alternative. What did you use for universal joints? Did you have to modify them to make them work? Also, how did you mitigate the horn button issue?
Thanks for any help you can give.
