I went to look at a 1962 101 Spider. Basically a nice car but I noticed when engine was off a "clunk" in the steering box. It was a light clunk. Vendor said "oh, that's not bad" (easy for him to say!).

Any comments , reflections on this ?

Was it steering box or idler arm or a bad tie / track rod end ?? The idlers wear and you get a knock from the steering, bad rod ends can give a knock. A '62 will have the later box and they are 'generally' trouble free

Take a knowledgeable Giuliettisti with you, check it out properly & use the knock to 'knock' the price down a few $$ and go for it

Difficult to diagnose from 19000 miles away, the end bearing of the box can disintegrate if the box runs out of oil - leaky seal or if it gets water in it.

Either way, boxes are available, off hand I know of two for sale in the US right now

I go back to my earlier comment - Take a knowledgeable Giuliettisti with you, check it out properly & use the knock to 'knock' the price down a few $$ and if it's worth it, then go for it
