When starting my 86 Graduate, I occasionally get nothing but a 'click' on first try. I then turn ignition switch to 'off' and try again - it usually cranks and starts immediately. Rarely, I have to cycle the ignition switch to 'off' 2 or 3 times before it cranks. This problem gradually seems to be getting more persistent and I'd like to fix it before it fails to start some day. My 35-year-old experience with starter systems on American cars makes me suspect this may be a solenoid problem. Opinions? Suggestions?

Thanks, Peter and Shoshone3! I was considering the ignition switch but didn't know how to diagnose switch vs. solenoid. Is the electrical contact cleaner method the easiest way to determine if it's the switch?
