sounds like the solenoid part of the starter burned up, could be faulty rebuild, I'd also be worried about bad grounds, did you use the center shoulder bolt and mounting shim?

BTW - was talking with IAP about sending some starter cores, the rep told me they are looking for a new vendor (rebuilder)

like click & clack, what else haven't you told us? the shards of metal worry me, wrong pinion gear? did you use the starter shim?

I would not undo the trans from the engine without the trans supported by the transmission jack. but first the front jack stands should be on the suspension pivots at the front crossmember, you won't have enough room for you and the tranny jack with stands on the frame rails. undo the slave feed line at the coupling on the rear of the crossmember, one way or another it needs to be seperated and I'd replace the rubber hose with flex steel line as a priority, also carefully inspect the guibo and the trans support bushing, don't forget the speedo cable and the centerlink is best moved out of the way.

"worked fine for a month" to me indicates the starter burned up do to internal rather than external (interface w/flywheel) flaw.

no gasket compound between engine and trans, gasket compounds are for gaskets, none in this application. the most important thing here is to make sure the flywheel is correctly seated, tighten the bolts in a star pattern, get everything flush before torquing any of the flywheel bolts
