Wheel arches of 750/101 Sprints were VERY prone to rusting. They are formed by rolling the sheetmetal around a piece of heavy gauge wire, creating a trap for moisture. This detail is difficult to restore, so many owners have chosen to install flares, rather than try to re-create the subtle shape of the factory wheel arches.
Not to knock my friend Jim Ashton's blue Sprint, but I prefer the original look.
Jim's car has looked like that for decades; I have pics of it from the AROC convention autocross in San Diego in 1979/80 and it looks just the same then. He's also into big tires and big cornering, so I'm not surprised by this on his car.
This kind of thing was common in the 60s and 70s. Air dams, spoilers, all kinds of stuff. I had a friend who made GTA-type rear flares into his 67 GTV about 1976 and we all thought it was the coolest. I wanted to do the same thing to all my Fiat 850s at the time but couldn't afford to.
