I only see the red Montreal that 'Beverly Hill Scar Club' has listed for $49,500. It looks like it needs a lot of work; as usual.

Thanks Edgar! That is one Montreal that I have seen listed many times and it is in much better condition than the Beverly Hill Scar Club car. It has several um, unique features including the red valve covers and air filter housing, screwed down gear shift boot and recovered puffy rear package area. All things pretty easily fixed or replaced if it runs well it is probably not a bad deal.

Red Montreal on eBay

I agree. I have seem it also a couple of times in several ads. The front bananas and lack of the cuore moustache very easy to fix as the red air filter cover. Why most of the Montreals riding in the US have the front and rear rectangular side markers instead of the traditional round orange? Similar question for the side mirrors. A lot rectangular black instead of chromed circular. US regulations?

There is an orange Montreal listed on eBay that I believe is fraudulent. I have reported my suspicions to eBay. I urge you to do the same, using the "report this item" link.

QUICK SALE

That's my metallic green car.
Listed on the sales website Sunday morning and sold six hours later based on photos with no physical inspection. He didn't even query the five seats !
There were five serious enquiries within 24 hours. Seems like Montreals are becoming more sought after in Aust.
Yesterday was a bitter sweet day.

Wow, quick sale is a good sale, but yes always sad when you have to move on a car especially a Monti!

Congrats on the sale John. Did you restore/paint it? Just curious on why the sill blackouts and the black across the rear isn't done?

I have seen some without it but not sure if it was a 'running change' or just owner preference.

Cheers.

Yes lots of work done on the car over six years.
I got rid of the dark accents because I feel they distract from the form of the car. My view has been that there is plenty going on with the bright work and other nice details without more complications.

Hi John

I was at Auto Italia in Canberra this year (April) and I spoke to the owner of the orange Montreal with a large serpent on the bonnet. He told me he had it for sale at $140k and had 4 interested parties. It wasn't a particularly good Montreal - certainly not as good as your one. I didn't believe him at first, but it does seem that any Montreal that hits the market here in Aus is sold without delay. I can't imagine why they have such value here. Especially as the factory made such a dog's breakfast of the centre console.

Cheers

I have seen photos of the orange serpent one.
Regarding values and desirability I guess rarity (180RHD examples made) impacts both.
Anecdotally I am told that there are wannabe Ferrari & Porsche owners who have been priced out of that market and so are attracted to a lower rung on the ladder.

You would be mad to try importing anything like this into Australia. Can you imagine the bureaucrats letting something like this through? Not a chance.

? Why ?

It’s older than 1991 so meets the Personal Import Legislation rules. Logistically, having it shipped to Aust. will be exactly the same as the USA or anywhere else. If it starts, then RORO, otherwise roll it into a container. I brought my car from the UK to Aust in a container. Drove it to the shipper, watched it get driven in, and they gave me a lift to Heathrow. Car arrived a few weeks (months) later.

You need Import approval from DoTARs in Aust. BEFORE it ships. If it meets the rules, they will want the VIN (and documented proof) to add to our federal register so you can pick it up off the docks and then register it when it arrives. Without DOTARs approval they will crush it on arrival or send it back. Approval cost me A$50 in 2008

It’s really pretty simple to be honest.
Older than 1991 is a cake walk

Craig,

I have imported 100's of cars and was a certified ADR Engineer... I started importing cars from UK in1982 and I was importing cars back in 1989 when they introduced the new legislation so I know exactly what is needed. The import approval and shipping is trivial paperwork. (and BTW- you would never ship a car RORO)

It's all about asbestos now. They won't let anything in that they even think MIGHT contain asbestos. These 105's could contain asbestos in the exhaust heat shields, exhaust gaskets, and even the head gasket. Let alone clutch and brake pads!!

Go and revisit the customs site for the latest. It has cost people 10,000's $$ in inspection fees, holding fees, mechanics fees only to get told that they will never see their car again.... Most recently, I know of someone that shipped a 105 coupe from Australia to England for a Vintage Rally and the Nanny State wouldn't let it back into Australia!!!

Check this out....
https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Busi/cargo-support-trade-and-goods/importing-goods/prohibited-and-restricted/asbestos

...."If asbestos is detected in goods being imported, the goods are seized as a prohibited import, and will be forfeited to the Crown for disposal. Re-export is not permitted"

You would need to pull this Monti apart, remove brake pads, clutch, exhaust gaskets, exhaust heat shields and head gaskets.
"They" reckon there asbestos in the sound deadening inside the cabin too!!

You have to demonstrate that you have addressed the issue 100% before they will let the car in!
