'78 Spider. Spica, Air Pump, Catalytic Converter. California
The owner of this Spider has a small fleet of cars and his Spider is the orphan. The car passed the tailpipe emissions test in 2015 and 2014 at 14510 mi and 14397 miles. It now has 14523 miles on it, 13 miles since his last emissions test! He lives about 6 miles away from the shop, so he must have driven to the market as well as home HaHa.
The engine runs dead rich at the tailpipe - 10%CO and will not react to input from threading the fuel cut solenoid in and out. The thermostatic actuator is virtually new and working perfectly. I drained and refilled the gas tank, general principles, as the fuel loses volatility over time and can really mess with the emissions even though the car runs ok, which it does. In fact, it even feels a little lean on acceleration.
The oil was last changed in 2006, but only 854 miles ago - it smells like stale gasoline but looks very clean on the dipstick. I am sniffing the exhaust with the air cleaner off, so it shouldn't be pulling fumes out of the crankcase, but it could be sucking it up past the rings.
Any thoughts? He wants to put the top down and start driving it regularly but need the emissions test to register it.
