Hello All
Was out for a drive last night and my speedometer just stopped working, there was no grinding or fluctuating needle prior to it stopping. I haven't had a chance to look for loose connections yet, but this appears to be a common issue, is there steps to troubleshoot this problem.

Regards

You have a transducer on the drivers side close to the firewall (engine compartment). This is most likely where you need to look first.

Also make sure the drive connection at the trans is good.

Fuse #7 is for the speedometer, heater blower, backup lights, and cigarette lighter. Check it first. It is common for the lighter to short out

check my post on alfaowner (the only difference to your S3 is that the "transducer" better known as the "impulse generator" - is not under the car like the S4, but as Elio, above, rightly says in the engine compartment and the S3 impulse generator has short wires and a long speedo cable, and the S4 has long wires and a short speedo cable)

A canadian guy on Ebay has a couple of s/h impulse generators if this is your problem:
