I have a 1987 Graduate with a (I think) weird problem. In trying to fix this I have purchased and installed 2 speedometer cable and housing assemblies thinking there was a cable problem. With a new cable I get about an hours worth of working speedo, then it just quits. Have finally tracked the problem down to this: with the cable fully into the transmission, the cable does not turn. Pull it out just a little and it works fine. There being no way to adjust the amount it goes in gives me the problem. It seems like the square inside part of the drive gear is only about 1/8 of an inch long and this quickly rounds off the square part of the cable. Has anyone else run into this and/or does anyone have a solution ?

Do you have the little plastic(?) round spacer that goes around the end of the cable inside the drive unit so that the cable sleeve cannot shove down in and thus change the amount that the cable itself inserts into the drive?
