Intermittently, I'll crank my '88 Quad, the engine will fire, but the starter hangs. Turning it off stops the mayhem. It's as if the solenoid is sticking.....or maybe the ignition switch.

Anyone seen this behavior?

So the starter continues to crank after engine starts and you release the key?
I've had a couple of old cars do this, and yes, it's usually the starter solenoid. The high current contacts get old and tend to fuse together when the solenoid plunger pulls in. On some cars, you can disassemble the solenoid and spin the terminals 180 degrees for a fresh contact surface. Or you can get new terminals.
However, check al sources of trouble. I would try jumping the starter solenoid with a screwdriver and see if it replicates, if so, you know it's solenoid. If not, work your way back from there.

Regards, Andrew.
