Hi all, I need some advice. I am considering buying a 2005 156 1.9 JTD Lusso. Problem is I know nothing about Alfas except some vague impression that they are unreliable and expensive to repair.

The car has full service history and looks in decent nick although I havnt seen it in person yet.

What I really need to know is:
How reliable can i realistically expect this car to be?
What could be wrong with it?
What should I look for in the service history?
What should I look for when viewing the car?

Thanks a lot for your advice!

If you live on an area where rust in cars is an issue, only buy a 10 year old car which been treated with anti rust wax/oil at least twice.
The Alfa/Fiat diesel engines are long lived. A 10 year old 156 is likely to have had some parts in suspension, brakes and steering changed. If not calculate to be spending $ on that.
I would never buy a second hand car with out a service history.
I owned an Alfa 156 2,0 TS until it was 12,5 years/215.000 km old. It was treated with anti rust twice but a little rust was present when sold. Mechanical it had been very reliable and only consumables was changed doing that time.
