I have the sump out of the veloce and would like to seal the lower sump with gasket maker material. The lower sump appears to have been sealed with a thin paper gasket and some yellowed cement a few decades ago by a previous owner. It seeps oil and I want to clean it out.

Any advice on how to best separate the two parts? Careful razor blading, heat perhaps?

I had problems separating mine too- I ended up soaking it in acetone/ATF fluid for a couple weeks until the old gasket swelled, then very carefully levered the two pc apart. Be very careful- I've heard that the finned lower casting is very easy to break. Needless to say, if you use a razor blade, you run the serious risk of scratching the mating surfaces and will need to re-face them on a glass plate to avoid leaks.

Thanks, Kevin. I'm afraid of gouging the surface too. Been using ATF/acetone as a good penetrating oil for years. Good suggestion. Thank you. Roberto
